The Bess Britton One-Room School House Collection is owned and maintained by the Van Buren District Library in Decatur, Michigan. It is a collection of information about over 4,000 Michigan rural schools, along with many photographs and some artifacts. The collection includes an every-name index, allowing researchers to easily locate students, teachers and administrators and is available to the public upon request. This collection continues to grow as new information is obtained from the public.

ONE-ROOM SCHOOL HOUSE MEMORY PROJECT Place your memory or the memory of a loved one into this permanent collection. The VBRGS is seeking memories from people who attended these rural schools in Michigan. If you attended a rural school, or have a memory from an ancestor, we would like to archive it for this collection and make it available to other researchers. This contribution would be open to the public and could be used in future VBRGS projects.
